Valdosta Man Dies After head on Collision With Trailer

On Thursday afternoon, September 22, a Valdosta man died after a head on collision with a trailer that broke free from a truck.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the accident happened at around 5.30 p.m. on Cat Creek Road near New Bethel Road, about a mile west of Moody Air Force Base. Gary Cantrell, aged 58, was heading north and then he collided head on with a grain trailer which had become detached from a pickup truck, being driven by 63 year old Walter Clayton of Sparks, as he was negotiating a curve. The trailer crossed into Cantrell’s lane and killed him outright.

His passenger in the vehicle, 38 year old Lawrence Robinette sustained minor injuries.

The investigation is still ongoing and though toxicology results are awaited at the time investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Charges against Clayton are expected, pending the completion of the investigation.
